Partner Description:

The chair of Geotechnics and Coastal Engineering closely connected with the Department of Maritime Systems at the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Research has specialised in geosynthetics for the last three decades. Prof. Saathoff is a world-known specialist in this field. Since about 10 years, the dewatering of dredged materials has been a main research field, and four years ago the institute started to investigate their application in dike construction. Other institutes of Rostock University have also been intensively working on the topic of dredged materials, such as contamination and soil fertility aspects.

Role in the Project:

In the project, the University of Rostock is the lead beneficiary and as such member of the steering and monitoring groups.

LB is responsible for the components (1) management and coordination, (2) communication and dissemination, and (5) the development of the best practice guideline.

Gdansk University of Technology (GUT) is one of the leading Universities in the North of Poland in the agglomeration formed by the three cities (Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot). The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering is one of the oldest and largest faculties at GUT.

Role in the Project

Within the project the Department of Geotechnics, Geology & Maritime Engineering, which is directed by Prof. Dr. Zbigniew Sikora, will be responsible for component 3. The Department is in charge of laboratory testing of the soil-ash mixtures and for the field tests at the test dike in Gdańsk. Furthermore the GUT will contribute to the proper design and construction of the pilot dike. One main aim is the dissemination of the project outputs by all means, including education (diploma works, seminars), technical meetings and conferences. The GUT as the direct university partner will also participate in the elaboration of design rules for the innovative dike materials and the production of the best practice guideline. They will provide the management for the Polish associated organisations. Beyond the GUT is planning a long-term cooperation within regional flood protection and the water management programme Żuławy 2030.

The Water and Soil Association „Untere Warnow – Küste“ (WBV) as one of 29 similar associations in Mecklenburg – West Pomerania is responsible for the maintenance of second order waters and dikes according to the Water Resources Law and the State Water Law. The pilot project, which will help to save a considerable amount of money for the reconstruction of dikes in the future, is very interesting for the WBV. The river dikes of the Körkwitzer Bach are in extremely poor condition. Nearby agricultural land and settlements are affected. Because remedy is urgently needed the WBV has already engaged a planning contractor to design the dike reconstruction containing a subsoil expertise and survey.

Role in the Project:

The association decided to be an eligible partner with responsibility for component 4. The WBV will also contribute to the durability of the project, since it is responsible for maintaining the pilot dike. WBV plans to use the technology, once approved, in other dike construction projects.

The Hanseatic City of Rostock runs own spoil fields where dredged materials from the city harbour are deposited. The spoil fields are under the control of the Civil Engineering and Harbour Construction Office. Since the spoil fields are filled to a great extent, the City of Rostock has a major interest in finding effective re-use strategies for dredged materials.

Role in the Project:

The City of Rostock will provide 5 ha of land in its spoil field Radelsee for the next ten years to build and maintain the test dikes. These dikes will stay on site at least 5 years after the project closure, so that the Office can do further testing. The City Office is responsible for the preparation of the construction site, the test dike construction and the maintenance of the test dikes.

Various pilot projects, including agricultural soil improvement and landfill construction, are supervised and realised by SIG-ALP. Finally SIG-ALP is the principal organizer of the well-established Rostock Dredging Seminar, the only conference on dredged materials in Germany, which will be used for dissemination.

Role in the Project:

In this project the SIG ALP will be responsible for chemical certification and choice of the material to be used for both the field tests and the pilot project. Furthermore the quality control of specified requirements in the technical measurements and especially the turf assessment will be realised by the SIG-ALP. It will be also responsible for the preparation of quality assessment reports for the materials used in Germany as well as the environmental and vegetation assessment reports.
