Dredged Material Compaction Testing Field

A dredged material compaction testing field of 10 x 10 m has been installed to prove the compactability of the dredged materials used in the test dike construction. Two dredged materials have been used, that will be applied as top layers in the test dike. Material 1 is an organic silt which has been dried for 5 years while Material 2 has been dried for 2 years only. The materials have been installed in three layers of approximately 0.35 m and compacted with a sheeps foot roller compactor using self weight (approx. 12 tons) and vibration.

Because the test dike construction has to be postponed to spring 2012 the testing fields will now be used to observe the turf development on the compacted surface of the different materials. To analyse the cracking behaviour and the effect of geosynthetic reinforcement on shrinking induced cracking two layers of geogrid were installed.
